In this episode, Fady and Kristen interview Dr. Rikki Horne and Dr. Megan Flanigan from the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. Drs. Horne and Flanigan are both veterinary pharmacists working side by side with veterinarians taking care of various species of animals. They each talk about their different journeys on their way to becoming veterinary pharmacists. They talked about how the role of veterinary pharmacists have changed over the years and how veterinary pharmacists do much more than verify prescriptions. We also talked about what it takes to be a veterinary pharmacist and who would do well as a veterinary pharmacist. It was a lot of fun learning about how dosing for animal medication differs from human medication and how you have to be able to be creative and think outside the box as a veterinary pharmacist! Presenter biographies:
Rikki Horne, PharmD, FSVHP
Dr. Horne completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology in 2011; then graduated from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in 2017. It was during pharmacy school when she was introduced to the specialty of clinical veterinary pharmacy. She started to gain experiences to make me more competitive for residencies. She completed her residency training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 2018. During her residency she was able to learn more about the clinical practice and application of pharmacy in veterinary medicine. She started her pharmacy career at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, in the fall of 2018. As a pharmacist there, her main roles, besides staffing of course, are to oversee and manage research projects where she assists in blinding protocols and patient randomization, help with non-sterile compounding where she develops master formulary records, and she is the lead pharmacist on our antimicrobial stewardship team where she helps with determining antimicrobial therapies for complicated infectious cases. Outside of work she enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with her wonderful German Shepard Dog, Murphee.
Fady Abdlrasul graduated with a doctorate of pharmacy degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2014. He began his career as a pharmacist at Rite Aid pharmacy from 2014 to 2016. He then went on to be a pharmacy manager at an independent pharmacy in the Canton area from 2016-2017. He became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at NEOMED in 2017 and soon after became the Director of Pipeline Programs in the Office of Student Success.
Kristen Longstreth graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and completed PGY1 residency training at West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, West Virginia. She is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (2002 to present). She previously served as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (2000 to 2020) and the PGY1 Residency Director (2004 to 2020) at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. From 2007 to 2013, she was a shared faculty member in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at NEOMED. She currently serves as the Director of Workforce Development for the College of Pharmacy. In addition, she is the Program Director for the College of Pharmacy’s Teaching and Learning Curriculum Program for pharmacy residents in Northeast Ohio.
