Emergency Medicine Pharmacy

In this episode, Fady and Kristen interview Ashley Jones, PharmD, BCPS. Dr. Jones is an Emergency Medicine Pharmacist at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. 
She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2018 and completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center where she later went on to create her own position in the emergency department. Dr. Jones talks to us about how she got interested in emergency medicine, what a normal day looks like, some of the challenges and rewarding aspects of her job, and so much more! Presenter biographies:


Ashley Jones, PharmD, BCPS is the Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in Chardon, Ohio.  Ashley obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University.  After graduation, she completed her residency training at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center where she created her Emergency Medicine service.  Ashley serves as the site Emergency Medicine pharmacist and is embedded within an interdisciplinary team responsible for providing evidenced-based pharmacotherapy regimens, quality improvement, and direct patient care in an IBM Watson Top 100 hospital, critical access, stroke honor roll, level III Trauma Center Emergency Department.  Her research interests include sepsis management, patient quality and safety, acute ischemic stroke management, and multi-modal management of acute pain. At her site, Ashley serves as the pharmacy lead for sepsis, stroke, and pediatric emergencies.  She is heavily involved in patient quality and process improvement committees at a site and system level.  Ashley is the UH system lead for improving electronic prescribing compliance for all emergency departments.  She provides education to medical and pharmacy residents and pharmacy students.  She is the primary preceptor for the PGY1 Emergency Medicine, Pharmacy Services, and Institutional Pharmacy student rotations.  Ashley is an appointed member of the Geauga County Board of Health and is interested in improving public health through education and outreach.  Ashley has played a key role in the education and implementation of COVID-19 pharmacotherapy protocol in her Emergency Department. She has been recognized for her achievements with stroke, sepsis, and COVID-19 contributions at her site. 

Fady Abdlrasul graduated with a doctorate of pharmacy degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2014. He began his career as a pharmacist at Rite Aid pharmacy from 2014 to 2016. He then went on to be a pharmacy manager at an independent pharmacy in the Canton area from 2016-2017. He became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at NEOMED in 2017 and soon after became the Director of Pipeline Programs in the Office of Student Success.

Kristen Longstreth graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and completed PGY1 residency training at West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, West Virginia. She is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (2002 to present). She previously served as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (2000 to 2020) and the PGY1 Residency Director (2004 to 2020) at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. From 2007 to 2013, she was a shared faculty member in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at NEOMED. She currently serves as the Director of Workforce Development for the College of Pharmacy. In addition, she is the Program Director for the College of Pharmacy’s Teaching and Learning Curriculum Program for pharmacy residents in Northeast Ohio.
